Farmhouses in Tuscany
These few lines are just a short guide or curiosity on the origns and some details about types of Tuscan farmhouses.
The first rural houses in Tuscany date back to the 1500's, when in the countryside they started to construct buildings to house the families of the land agent and farmers. The settlements developed generally where isolated fortresses or watch tower used to be in the middle ages, which were often incorporated in the new building of the 1500's. In the 1700's, the agrarian reformation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany gave a further impulse both to the construction of new farmhouses and country houses, and to the restructuring of previous eras. In the course of the 1900's, the phenomenon of urbanization led to a progressive depopulation in the countryside and to a progressive degradation in various rural settlements. Fortunately, in the second half of the last century, a phenomenon of rediscovery and improvement of rural Tuscan farmhouses has started, thanks also to many foreigners (above all, English and German) who have invested their capital for the recuperation of many abandoned farmhouses, transforming them into agricultural companies and holiday farms. Soon, all the rural areas of the region where involved in this process, which allowed the rural houses to became an integral part of the Tuscan landscape.
Arezzo, Florence and Siena farmhouses. The three type of rural farmhouses are characterised by their residential typology. The Arezzo type generally has both a porch and loggia, the Florentine type has only the porc, whille the Sienese is often without the porc. in the Valdichiana, and some areas of the Sienese, Florentine and Arezzo Chianti, the residential buildings can culminate with a characteristcs dove coat tower.
